The plant that ultimately became the Uniroyal plant was founded in 1916 by R.B. Gillette as the Gillette Rubber Company. In 1940, the United States Rubber Company, later Uniroyal, Inc., purchased Gillette. For a brief period during World War II the Eau Claire plant was called the Gillette Tire Plant. The plant closed in 1991, following the purchase of Uniroyal Goodrich by Michelin et Cie. The Ku Klux Klan was formally incorporated under the laws of the state of Georgia on Dec. 4, 1915. The incorporated organization is a continuance of the earlier post Civil War Reconstruction Era unincorporated Ku Klux Klan and of the Knights of the White Camellia.
